One of the key themes of Tourism Academy 2026 was the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on the tourism industry. Speakers explored how generative AI is transforming content creation by producing text, images, audio, and video, while agentic AI is beginning to make decisions with minimal human intervention. Despite these advances, presenters emphasized that AI remains a tool that requires human oversight, editing, and fact-checking to ensure accuracy and authenticity.

The importance of developing thoughtful AI policies was also highlighted. Organizations are encouraged to establish guidelines that protect data privacy, preserve brand integrity, clarify workplace responsibilities, and support equitable opportunities for local businesses as AI adoption increases.

Industry data shared during the conference showed that while only about 10 percent of people currently use AI daily, approximately 64 percent of travelers are already using AI tools to help plan trips. This shift underscores the importance of ensuring destination content is discoverable, accurate, and optimized for both human users and AI-powered search experiences.

Google's Elis Hinkel discussed evolving search trends and best practices for search engine optimization (SEO). Recommendations included geotagging images, using descriptive alt text, regularly auditing website content, and maintaining clean site data to reduce misinformation and improve visibility in AI-driven search results. Visual content remains critically important, with an emphasis on authentic outdoor imagery, people actively participating in experiences, and regularly refreshed photography.

Presenters also encouraged destinations to approach AI-generated imagery cautiously. Authenticity remains a cornerstone of successful destination marketing, and maintaining public trust is essential. As communities continue to evaluate tourism's impact, destinations must balance innovation with responsible stewardship and transparent communication.

As technology continues to evolve, Tourism Academy 2026 reinforced the importance of embracing innovation while remaining committed to authenticity, community trust, and exceptional visitor experiences.
